I actually started the vacation in Long Beach and stayed there a night before making my way up to Westport. I rented a cottage at the Anchorage which was located right on the beach (or at least close to it). The accommodations were magnificent. The cabins were clean and comfortable, plus they were in an ideal location. The Crab Pot restaurant served the best prepared oysters I have ever eaten. I took a drive to Fort Canby State Park but, being out of season, there wasn't much available. The following morning I took to the beach for a little surf fishing. The experience wasn't quite as successful as I had hoped, owing in part to the use of a Penn spinning reel that contained no bail. Despite the challenge of using unorthodox equipment, the fishing was still very enjoyable.

March in western Washington is usually a month of precipitation and 2003 was no exception. The rain made crabbing a fairly miserable experience so we didn't spend a lot of time on the docks. The NCAA tournament kept us amused while the rain kept us indoors. We did have clear, albeit windy weather on one day which allowed us to visit Westhaven State Park and fish off the south jetty.
