During the August trip, we made a small hike up Union Creek to the falls of the North Fork. The hike was only 3.5 miles round trip with an elevation gain of about 600 feet. The scenery around the falls was magnificent which was a nice reward for the effort of the initial climb and the unwieldy crossing at "Hoover Dam" (a section of the trail across a wide dirt face which was very thin and unstable).

We hope to return next year, however it might not be possible. This area is due to be closed to motorized access pending public input. While the area would still be open, the closure to automobiles would make camping all but impossible. The rationale for this move is to cut down on the abuse that people cause to the land. However, our experience has been nothing but positive. The campsites are clean and uncrowded and there doesn't seem to be any evidence of vandalism. There are far worse sites in the state that should be closed (see South Fork of the Skokomish River). It would truly be a shame if a wonderful recreational spot was taken away because of the actions perpetuated by a few slobs.
